Char Sar No, 5 years old and Ah Da, 2, came to the learning center together with their older siblings. Both their parents are farmers and every week they take off to work at the farm outside of town. They are usually gone Monday to Saturday.

Many Lisu from remote villages have migrated to Kachin’s capital of Myitkyina in search for a better life, but the unemployment in town is high. Some of them find work at farms outside of town, but many also look for jobs in Kachin’s many jade mines, which is a very hazardous and unstable work environment. They have to travel far away and leave their children behind with grandparents or siblings, that can hopefully care for them. .
